## Questions about backlinks

### What is a backlink?

A backlink is a link from another website to yours. Search engines read backlinks as a sign of trust: links from more websites, and from stronger ones, help your pages rank, and they raise scores like Ahrefs' Domain Rating.

### What's the difference between dofollow and nofollow links?

A dofollow link is an ordinary link: search engines follow it and count it toward your rankings. There's no dofollow attribute, only the absence of a nofollow one. A link marked rel="nofollow" asks search engines not to count it, and Google treats that as a hint rather than a rule.

### What do sponsored and ugc mean?

They're more specific kinds of nofollow: rel="sponsored" marks paid links and ads, and rel="ugc" marks links in content users post, like comments and forums. Search engines treat both like nofollow, and so does the checker. A page's robots meta tag can also mark every link on it nofollow at once.

### Why does the checker find no link when I can see one?

It reads the page's HTML as it first arrives, the way search engines first see it. A link added later by JavaScript may not be there yet, a link through the site's own redirect (like /out?url=…) points to that site rather than yours, and some websites turn away automated visits. Links to your domain count with or without www, and so do links to its subdomains.

### Do nofollow links help my SEO?

A little at most: they can bring visitors, and search engines may still take them as a hint, but they pass far less ranking strength than dofollow links. When you choose where to list your product, look for directories that link to it dofollow.

### Is the backlink checker free?

Yes, with no account needed. You can check up to 10 pages at a time, and up to 100 a day, which keeps it free for everyone. Each page is read fresh, so you can check again as soon as a link is fixed.
